Step-by-step guide

Rename a Portfolio

Update a portfolio label without changing the underlying records or ownership assumptions.

Start from the switcher and choose Rename for the portfolio you are viewing.

Before you start

Rename a portfolio when the label is unclear, outdated or too similar to another portfolio. Renaming changes the display name only. It does not change assets, liabilities, ownership, base currency, permissions, linked portfolios or historical evidence.

You are viewing the portfolio you intend to rename.
You have permission to manage portfolio structure.
You know the new name you want collaborators and recipients to see.
You understand that the rename is a label change, not a data migration.
You are ready to tell collaborators if the new name changes how they should navigate.

Detailed steps

01

Open the portfolio switcher and choose Rename

Open the switcher from the top bar and check which portfolio is active. Choose Rename only for the portfolio you want to relabel. If you need to rename a child portfolio from the map, open Portfolio Map and use the rename action on that node.

Start from the switcher and choose Rename for the portfolio you are viewing.
02

Read the current name in the rename form

The rename modal opens with the current portfolio name already filled. Use this pause to confirm you are editing the correct portfolio. If the name shown is not the one you expected, cancel and switch portfolios before continuing.

The current name appears in the modal before you change it.
03

Enter the new display name

Enter a name that will be clear in the top bar, switcher, exports and shared views. Good names describe the owner, entity or purpose. Avoid names that require private explanation, because collaborators and recipients may see the label without your context.

Use a name that will remain clear in navigation, exports and shared views.
04

Save and confirm the top bar updates

Click Rename and wait for the top bar to update. The records stay the same; only the label changes. If the old name still appears after saving, refresh the page and check the switcher.

After saving, confirm the top bar shows the new name.
05

Open the switcher and check the renamed list

Open the switcher again and confirm the renamed portfolio appears in the correct position. This is especially important when there are multiple portfolios with similar currencies or similar holdings.

Open the switcher again to confirm the renamed portfolio appears correctly.

Decision rules

What it adds

  • Keeps workspace labels understandable for owners, family members and advisors.
  • Reduces mistakes when multiple portfolios have similar asset mixes.

What it does not do

  • Renaming does not change ownership, permissions or base currency.
  • Historical exports may still contain the old name.

Common mistakes

What to check

  • Avoid vague names such as Main or Portfolio 2 in complex structures.
  • Tell collaborators if a renamed portfolio changes how they should navigate.

Renaming the wrong active portfolio.

Using a vague name that creates confusion later.

Assuming rename changes ownership or legal structure.

Expecting rename to change base currency.

Expecting rename to move records into another portfolio.

Not telling collaborators that a familiar portfolio name changed.

Renaming to hide a data problem instead of fixing the underlying records.

After you save

  • Check the top bar.
  • Open the switcher and confirm the list is clear.
  • Open Portfolio Map if the renamed portfolio has parent or child relationships.
  • Tell collaborators or advisors if they rely on the old name.
  • Review exports or share links when the name matters to the recipient.
  • Use Create portfolio instead if you actually need a separate balance sheet.
