Step-by-step guide

Assets Overview

Assets is the working ledger for public markets, private investments, real assets, cash, business interests and unclassified records.

Start by checking the portfolio, visible asset total, category tabs and any Capital Review prompt.

Before you start

Use Assets as the working ledger for everything you own in the selected portfolio. This is where you check holdings, add new records, open imported or manual assets, review values and decide whether something belongs in Investments, Real Assets, Cash or Held Away.

You are in the correct portfolio.
You understand that Assets shows visible asset records, not debts.
You know whether Held Away should remain protected or be included for the current session.
You have source evidence ready before editing a value: statement, appraisal, broker record, bank screen, manager report or owner estimate.
You are prepared to open Capital Review when the Assets screen flags a review item.

Detailed steps

01

Open Assets and start with Investments

Open Assets from the left navigation. Before you read totals, confirm the portfolio name in the header. Investments opens first because listed securities and investment holdings are usually the most frequently updated records. The main Assets number is the visible asset total for that portfolio. It excludes debts and excludes Held Away while Held Away is protected.

Start by checking the portfolio, visible asset total, category tabs and any Capital Review prompt.
02

Open Real Assets when physical assets explain the balance sheet

Use Real Assets for property, vehicles, precious metals, art, collectibles and similar assets. Read current value separately from invested or committed amount. If a property has a mortgage, the property belongs here and the mortgage belongs in Debts so equity is not double-counted.

Use Real Assets when you need to review property and other physical assets separately from investments.
03

Open Cash to separate liquid balances from investments

Use Cash for bank accounts, brokerage cash, money market balances, treasury reserves and operating reserves. Cash is usually more liquid than investments or real assets, so it matters for Forecast and Investment Plan. Do not use Cash for credit limits, pending transfers or securities you could sell later.

Use Cash for bank, brokerage cash, money market, treasury or operating reserve balances.
04

Check Held Away before expecting private assets in totals

Held Away is encrypted and excluded from totals, charts and analysis until you include it. If the tab says Protected, those assets are intentionally hidden from the visible balance sheet. Include Held Away only when you are comfortable revealing private values in the current browser session.

Held Away stays encrypted and excluded until you intentionally include it for the session.
05

Use Add Capital Item for new records or statement imports

Click Add Capital Item when you need to add something new. Choose the category first: Accounts, Public Markets, Private Markets, Crypto, Real Assets, Held Away or Debt. Use Import Statement when a screenshot, PDF or CSV should be extracted and reviewed before becoming portfolio records.

Add Capital Item is the entry point for manual records and Import Statement.
06

Open More details before you trust or change a row

Use More details on any asset row to inspect the full record. The detail modal shows the category-specific tab plus Value, Returns, Reporting, Assorted, Notes and Documents. Read the details before editing so you know whether the row came from a manual entry, market data, an import or an estimate.

More details opens the full record so you can inspect the fields behind the row.
07

Review the Value tab before relying on a number

Open Value when you need to understand the figure feeding Assets, Net Worth and review workflows. Check whether the value is market-refreshed, imported, appraised or manually maintained. If the value is old or unsupported, update the record or add evidence before using it for decisions.

The Value tab explains the number feeding Assets, Net Worth and review workflows.
08

Use the options menu carefully

Open the options menu when you need to edit, move category or archive a record. Edit changes the record. Move category changes how the asset is classified. Archive removes the record from the current balance sheet view, so use it only when the asset should no longer count in this portfolio.

Use options carefully: Edit changes the record, Move category changes classification and Archive removes it from the current balance sheet.

Field guide

Assets total

The visible total value of asset records in the selected portfolio.

Compare it with category totals and remember protected Held Away is excluded.
Investments

Public markets, private investments, private credit and crypto records.

Check ticker, units, source, owned value and gain or loss.
Real Assets

Property and physical assets such as vehicles, metals and collectibles.

Keep gross asset value separate from debt.
Cash

Liquid or cash-like balances.

Confirm currency and whether the cash is really available.
Held Away

Private encrypted assets that can remain outside normal totals.

Do not expect them in charts until you include them.
Capital Review

A prompt that the portfolio has open checks or data questions.

Open it before relying on incomplete or flagged data.
Owned value

The current value counted in Assets.

Open the Value tab when the number needs source context.
Gain / loss

Difference between current value and invested or committed amount where available.

Do not treat it as tax reporting without source records.

Decision rules

What it adds

  • Turns scattered evidence into a reviewable list of holdings.
  • Separates operating categories so investment, cash and private wealth decisions are not mixed.
  • Preserves source confidence and imported context where available.

What it does not do

  • Manual records are only as reliable as their entered values and dates.
  • Some private assets need independent valuation evidence.
  • Unclassified assets should be resolved before relying on allocation analysis.

Common mistakes

What to check

  • Confirm currency, ownership percentage and valuation method for each significant asset.
  • Use notes for assumptions that another reviewer would need to understand.
  • Keep private access instructions out of normal asset notes; use protected areas instead.

Reading the Assets total without confirming the active portfolio.

Expecting Held Away to be included while the tab says Protected.

Adding a property net of mortgage instead of adding the property in Assets and the mortgage in Debts.

Entering a credit line or available borrowing capacity as Cash.

Creating a manual asset that already exists from an import.

Archiving a record just to hide a messy value instead of fixing the source data.

Trusting an old manual value without checking its valuation date or evidence.

After you save

  • Recheck the category tab where the asset belongs.
  • Open Net Worth to confirm the balance sheet changed as expected.
  • Open Capital Review when a prompt appears.
  • Add documents or notes when another reviewer would need evidence.
  • Update linked debts separately when an asset has financing.
  • Keep Held Away protected unless you intentionally need a private full-net-worth view.
