Step-by-step guide

Add a Cash or Bank Account

Record a cash, bank, treasury, Wise or Revolut account as part of current net worth.

Start in Cash and check whether the account already exists before creating another row.

Before you start

Use this workflow when you want to record money that is already cash or cash-like: bank balances, operating reserves, treasury bills, money market balances, Wise, Revolut or brokerage cash. Do not use this workflow for invested securities, private funds, property or credit lines.

You are in the correct portfolio.
You have the latest balance from the bank, cash app, custodian or statement.
You know the account currency.
You know whether the balance is spendable, reserved, tax cash, escrow cash or operating cash.
You have checked that the same account was not already added manually or imported.

Detailed steps

01

Open Assets > Cash

Go to Assets and select Cash. Check the current Cash table before adding anything. If the account already exists, update that record instead of creating a duplicate. Cash should represent balances that are already liquid, not investments you could sell later.

Start in Cash and check whether the account already exists before creating another row.
02

Open Add Capital Item and choose Cash Account

Click Add Capital Item. In Accounts, choose Cash Account for a bank balance, money market balance, treasury reserve or operating reserve. Use Bank or Brokerage when you need the broader bank/custodian label, and Import Statement when a document should be extracted first.

Use Cash Account for bank, money market, treasury or operating reserve balances.
03

Review the Cash Account form

The form keeps four facts separate: Name, Institution / source, Current value and Currency. Name is your label. Institution / source is where the balance comes from. Current value is the current balance. Currency is the account's native currency.

The manual form asks for name, institution, current value and currency.
04

Enter the current balance and source currency

Enter the account name, institution, current balance and currency from the source. Do not convert the amount manually just to match the portfolio base currency. Do not enter available credit, overdraft limit, pending deposits or reserved escrow money as ordinary cash unless the note makes that restriction clear.

Enter the outstanding cash balance in the account's source currency.
05

Save and verify the Cash table

After saving, confirm the row appears in Cash. Check the name, institution, position detail, owned value, currency and liquidity. Cash should usually show daily liquidity. If the row says invested unknown, that is normal for cash because cost basis is not the main purpose of the record.

After save, confirm the account appears in Cash with value, currency and daily liquidity.
06

Open Net Worth and confirm liquidity changed

Return to Net Worth and verify cash is included in total assets and liquidity. If assets changed but the Cash tab did not, refresh and confirm the active portfolio. If Net Worth looks too high, check whether you duplicated an imported or manually maintained account.

Net Worth should show the cash balance inside assets and liquidity.

Field guide

Name

The label shown in Cash, details and review screens.

Use a name that identifies the account's purpose, such as emergency reserve or operating cash.
Institution / source

The bank, cash app, custodian or statement source.

Use the source name from the statement or account screen.
Current value

The current cash balance.

Use the latest cleared balance unless you intentionally include pending items.
Currency

The native currency of the account.

Use USD, EUR, GBP or the source currency shown by the account.
Liquidity

How quickly the balance can be used as cash.

Cash is usually daily, but restricted escrow, tax reserves or locked deposits need notes or different treatment.
Cash table total

The Cash category total inside Assets.

It should increase by the saved balance after save.
Net Worth

Assets minus liabilities after the cash account is added.

Net Worth should rise by the cash amount when no matching liability is added.

Decision rules

What it adds

  • Makes available liquidity visible to Forecast and Investment Plan.
  • Separates spendable cash from invested or illiquid assets.

What it does not do

  • Manual cash records do not sync with the bank.
  • Transactions are only present when imported or recorded separately.

Common mistakes

What to check

  • Use the account's native currency.
  • Do not include reserved tax or escrow cash in investable budget without a note.

Entering available credit as cash.

Entering a pending transfer twice: once in the sending account and once in the receiving account.

Mixing reserved tax, escrow or operating cash with investable cash without a note.

Creating a manual account after importing the same bank statement.

Changing the currency to the portfolio base currency without a source conversion.

Using Cash Account for securities, crypto, private funds or property.

Ignoring account ownership when a balance belongs to a business, trust or another person.

After you save

  • Check the Cash table row and total.
  • Open Net Worth and confirm assets and liquidity increased.
  • Add a note or document when the cash is restricted, reserved or not investable.
  • Use Import Bank Statement next time when a PDF, CSV or screenshot should create the row.
  • Update the balance whenever the statement changes materially.
  • Review Investment Plan assumptions before treating all cash as available budget.
